When a meteor delivers a baby to a childless couple living on a rural farm, it is to be expected that this child will develop superpowers. We also expect that child to use his powers for good and to fight for justice. What if this child turned out to be evil instead of good and used his powers to do harm to others? This is exactly the question that the movie Brightburn explores.
4DX theater release
Brightburn is scheduled to premiere in theaters on May 24, 2019 through Screen Gems, a subsidiary of Sony Pictures. Not only will it be in regular theaters, but it is one of the thirteen Sony Pictures films that will be released in 4DX theaters. Sony Pictures has signed an agreement with the Korean company CJ 4DPLEX to release a full slate of movies in this format.
4DX is an innovative new technology that is designed to draw more people to the theaters. It was launched in 2009, and it enhances the film with 21 different sensory effects. The seats move along with the action of the movie, and there are scents, wind, water, snow, and bursts of light. In addition to Brightburn, some of the other Sony films that will be released into this format are Escape Room on January 4, The Intruder on April 26, an untitled Men in Black spinoff on June 14, Spider-Man: Far From Home on July 5, Zombieland 2 on October 11, Charlie’s Angels on November 1, and Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sequel on December 13.
Naturally, tickets for a 4DX immersive experience are more expensive than tickets for a regular showing. They seem to be about twice the cost. At present, many reviewers have said that the 4DX experience is a bit gimmicky and feels a bit like a ride at an amusement park rather than an enhanced movie. On the other hand, it will be interesting to see what happens when these films from the major producer Sony Pictures are released into this format.
About Brightburn
If you decide to go to the theater to see Brightburn, either at a conventional showing or with the new 4DX technology, what kind of movie will it be?
Below is the official trailer:
Brightburn was produced by James Gunn. He also wrote and directed the Disney film Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Disney fired him in July 2018 for offensive tweets, but he publicly apologized for these tweets. Sony picked him up, and this will be the first film that he created since that firing.
The movie was directed by David Yarovesky. The boy with superpowers is played by Jackson A. Dunn, and his parents are played by Elizabeth Banks and David Denman.
It purposely invokes all of the themes of Superman, but with a dark twist. At present, all that has been released is the official trailer, but many reviewers seem to be intrigued by the concept.
Will Brightburn Come To Netflix?
If you are not interested in the 4DX experience, and you do not want to go to theaters to see it, will you be able to see it on Netflix?
Sadly, Brightburn will probably not be coming to Netflix.
The reason for this is that the distributor of Brightburn, Sony Pictures, has a long-time contract with the cable network, Starz, one of Netflix’s rivals. This means it will be a very long time before Brightburn will appear on Netflix, if ever.
If you are interested in seeing the previous work of the creator James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is on Netflix right now. You might also be interested in the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, in which a teenage girl must navigate between normal life and that of a witch.
