David Tennant is a British actor who is best known for playing the tenth incarnation of Doctor Who from 2005 to 2010. He is considered the best Doctor ever, and he is one of the most famous British actors. Tennant recently announced that he would be returning to Doctor Who in the audio-drama series Doctor Who: Out of Time.
Tennant rarely talks about his private life and relationships, but when he does, he showers praise on his wife, Georgia Tennant. This piece will look at Georgia and David’s relationship, the couple’s children, Georgia’s famous family, and the motivation behind Georgia’s charity work.
She and David met on the set of a 2008 episode of Doctor Who
Georgia met David met in 2008 as they filmed an episode of Doctor Who. The pair struck up a relationship, and after a couple of years, David decided to propose. He told Jonathan Ross that he presented the ring as a hilarious Christmas present. David said:
“I wrapped up a big box in Christmas paper and there was another box inside that and another inside that. She didn’t get it. It was weird. She was going through [the boxes] and by box 10, she still hadn’t figured out what I was doing. It was great, she opened the last box and it worked. She said ‘Yes’, thankfully!”
The pair got married a year later in a private ceremony held in London. December is usually a special month for couple because they celebrate their marriage, Christmas, and Georgia’s birthday. David explained that Georgia’s birthday gets lost in the festivities, but the couple has found a special way to celebrate it. He continued:
“We stay up just past midnight on Christmas Day, and when all the kids are in bed we’ll have a five minute celebration. Then you’re like, the kids are going to get up in 20 minutes so we need to get some sleep!”
Georgia got pregnant with the first of her five children at the age of 16
Georgia got pregnant with her first child, Ty Tennant, at the age of 16. She’d gotten involved with a 20-year-old boy, and she got pregnant despite taking precautions. With the support of her parents, she kept the child. David adopted Ty after getting married to Georgia. Ty currently has four siblings: Olive, Doris, Wilfred, and Birdie. David talked to Jonathan Ross about his children:
“[I have] five [children now] it’s quite a lot, it’s a sofa full! It is great. It’s a lot of work but there’s nothing like it really. The baby is nine weeks old now so you’re just getting that thing where you look and get a smile back. You’d give up any night’s sleep for that.”
Georgia recently shared a full family photo with her followers on Instagram. In the picture, the family wore odd socks in commemoration of Down Syndrome Day. In light of parents spending more time with their kids at home due to the coronavirus pandemic, Georgia posted a message on Instagram in celebration of stay at home mothers. The post read, “And just like that, no-one ever asked a stay at home mama what she did all day ever again.”
She appeared with her father Peter Davison on The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot
Georgia was born in London to actors Peter Davison and Sandra Dickinson. Peter played the role of Doctor Who in the early 80s. Georgia made her acting debut in the series Peak Practice in 1999. She later starred alongside her father in The Last Detective and Fear, Stress, & Anger.
Georgia and Peter worked together again in the 2013 comedy The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. The father-daughter duo directed, produced, and starred in the film. The film also featured cameo appearances from David and two of the couple’s children. At the time of filming, Georgia was heavily pregnant with her third child, and part of the film featured a scripted scene in which she went into labor.
Tennant produced the 2015 film 96 Ways to Say I Love You before returning to acting in the 2017 miniseries, In the Dark.
She is a patron of the charity Straight Talking which educates people about teen pregnancy
When Georgia found out that she was pregnant at the age of 16, she was immediately worried about her child’s health. She had been drinking and smoking without knowing that she was pregnant, and she worried that it might have affected her child’s health. After scans affirmed the baby’s good health, she feared how she would open up to her parents about the pregnancy.
Georgia feared opening up to her dad the most, and so she called her step-mom and asked her to reveal the pregnancy to Peter. According to The Free Library, Georgia said:
“It was a big shock for him… But you know dad is so cool. He just rang me and said, ‘Is this the right thing for you? Because the choices you make now are going to change your life forever.’ I told him it was the right thing – and from that moment he supported me all the way.”
Georgia’s mom also supported her decision to keep the baby, and even came up with the name Ty for the boy. Georgia had the unconditional love of her parents during this trying time, but she suffered from stigma from the outside world. It was the hardest thing she had to deal with, which was the main reason she joined Straight Talking. She loved that the charity didn’t discriminate and judge any young parent who needed help.
Peter Davison also joined the charity alongside Georgia. He wrote on the charity’s website that even though he supported Georgia’s decision to keep the child, he felt deep down that it wasn’t the right decision. However, he wrote that he was glad that Georgia decided to keep the child as he couldn’t imagine life without Ty. Peter wrote:
“What stopped me from voicing this more strongly was; we don’t hold dominion over our children. If we feel they have let us down, then we are dangerously close to letting them down, and apart from being the worst thing we can do to them, it’s also the worst thing we can do to ourselves.”
